What You Can Learn from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Part 1)

I would like to ask what was the first thought that came into your mind when you read the title of this article? I bet it must be Shivaji Maharaj, a great warrior, a rebel, Maratha king, etc. etc. But, let me tell you guys he was much much more than that. He was a great management guru, an ardent politician, a great planner, and an executionist.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the father of the Indian Navy. He was the first to realize the importance of a strong navy. Fighting the Siddis (who had their base at Murud Janjira) and observing the Portuguese naval power along the Konkan coast, Shivaji Maharaj realized the importance of having an efficient system of ports and a strong navy. He believed in forts and built many coastal forts such as at Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and many others along the Konkan coast.

Nowadays, it is sad to see that people are using his name and legacy for their own political gains and personal glorification. Nevertheless, not everyone is that selfish, and I am hopeful that readers of this post will try to help themselves and people around them to succeed in this journey of life. In my opinion, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the ocean of knowledge, political tactics, and some great personal values. This article is just a small attempt to take a glass full of water from this ocean.

In this article, we are going to focus on 5 most important virtues which you can learn from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and inculcate in your day-to-day lives:-

  1. Dream/Vision
  2. Passion
  3. Dedication
  4. Management
  5. Thinking and planning

1 Dream/Vision

Let me start with something which is an integral of Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy. The Rajmudra, which was given to him by his father, Shahajiraje Bhosale, at the age of 12 when he was leaving for Pune with his mother, Jijabai Bhosale. The Rajmudra is basically a stamp or The Royal Seal that Shivaji Maharaj used in his letters and ordinances.

The Rajmudra reads as follows:

प्रतिपच्चंद्रलेखेव। वर्धिष्णुर्विश्ववंदिता।
शाहसूनो: शिवस्यैषा मुद्रा भद्राय राजते।।

It’s meaning in Marathi is,

“प्रतिपदेचा चन्द्र जसा वाढत जातो, आणि सरे विश्व त्याला जसे वंदन करते, तशीच तशीच ही मुद्रा व् तिचा लौकिक वाढत जाईल.”

Similarly, it’s meaning in English is,

“The glory of this Mudra of Shahaji’s son Shivaji (Maharaj) will grow like the first-day moon. It will be worshiped by the world & it will shine only for the well-being of people.”

Shahajiraje saw his unfulfilled dream of Swarajya (Own Kingdom) in his son’s, Shivaji Maharaj’s, eyes. Shivaji Maharaj made it his own and he left no stone unturned to make this a reality. This is the power of dream and vision. If you have a clear vision and if you could visualize it in reality, there is no power that could stop you from realizing that dream. So, I would say see a dream with your eyes wide open, visualize it and work hard until it’s a reality.

2. Passion

Passion is a desire which drives you to achieve whatever you want to. A desire fueled by passion will bring about the greatest results in life. It will push you through difficult times because you don’t care what it takes to become better. Shivaji Maharaj experienced so many ups and downs in his tenure.

Finding what you are passionate about is a journey in itself. It is quite habitual to feel frustrated if you don’t know what you are passionate about, but I would say don’t be, it is not worth it. Frustration will eat up your time and mental health without yielding any positive outcomes. Instead, what you can do is sit, relax and think about the things that drive you crazy. You can start working in this direction and may find your passion down the road. The key here is that nothing will happen in a few initial years, so don’t expect results right at the start. Remember, it took Shivaji Maharaj a whole lifetime of 50 years to build the Swarajya (Own Kingdom).

It is very important to inculcate the passion in you as well as people who are working with you. One of the most significant reasons behind Shivaji Maharaj’s success was that he instilled love and passion for Swarajya in every soldier and minister who worked with him. The vision of Swarajya would have been long lost in 1660 when General Siddhi Johar laid the siege of Panhalgad to capture the Maratha warrior. But the sacrifice of Shiva Kashid, Bajiprabhu Deshpande and hundreds of Mavale (soldiers in Shivaji Maharaj’s army) foiled Johar’s attempt, saving Shivaji Maharaj.

3 Dedication/Commitment

Dedication is devotion towards a task or purpose. It is having single-minded loyalty or integrity. Sometimes, you need to commit everything in your possession if you want to be successful.

It is basically a cycle. Let me explain. You think of a dream and visualize it in reality. You start to work towards it. In your journey, many difficulties will try to deviate from your goals, but your dedication is not letting you do so. Without you knowing, that dream has turned in to your passion and you are just unable to stop thinking about it. A small step per day is contributing to the journey of a lifetime. Period!

Shivaji Maharaj’s dedication towards Swarajya is just unmatchable. Let me narrate you a story. Everyone knows the story of Afzal Khan, a Mughal general and his execution at Pratapgad, but very few know what was happening in Shivaji Maharaj’s personal life at the same time. Saibai, Shivaji Maharaj’s first wife, was ill from the time she gave birth to Sambhaji, Shivaji Maharaj’s first son. Her illness became very critical and at the same time, Shivaji Maharaj was busy making preparations for his meeting with Afzal Khan at Pratapgad. He could not even see his beloved wife for the last time as Saibai’s illness resulted in her untimely death on 5 September 1659 (aged 26).
