I let Google autocomplete “Why {State name} is_____”

google autocorrect

Prelude

We know how search engines work. With each day passing, they are getting better and better at predicting what we are exactly looking for. Google autocomplete primarily works on the popularity and freshness of your search query. If you are logged into your Google account it will show results depending on your search history. If you have turned off your history (I think you should), or if you are using incognito mode, the autocomplete results will be depending on your current location along with the popularity of that search term.

This got me thinking. What if I apply this logic to actually see what people are searching for in terms of 28 Indian States. I used incognito mode to get results based on my location and popularity.

I just asked one simple question and let the Google search algorithms do the rest of the job:

Why {Name of the state} is _______

Why is Tamilnadu against Hindi? After an exhaustive and divisive debate, while making the Indian Republic, Hindi was adopted as the official language of India with English continuing as an associate official language for a period of fifteen years, after which Hindi would become the sole official language. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a descendant of Dravidar Kazhagam, led the opposition to Hindi.

7.     Delhi

Why is Delhi so polluted? Delhi is the most polluted capital city in the world. Other Asian capitals also face similar problems. Why is Uttar Pradesh so dangerous? The state administration is already under severe criticism over the alleged mishandling of the Hathras incident – reported almost double rape cases in the last 10 years – from 1,759 in 2009 to 3,065 in 2019. According to the mint, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) ranks Uttar Pradesh as the worst for women’s security

Conclusion

We search for a lot of things on Google every day. All the keywords are getting stored in the backend to improve search results. These keywords are combined with various factors such as location, age, current search trend, etc. This all data helps google autocomplete to show the most relevant queries to us.

This is a fun experiment and it actually showed us a picture of what people are exactly searching for. These states are being searched for various reasons. For the sake of simplicity and to avoid duplication of results, I have picked the second-best result.
